Before you begin

Complete account setup and card checks before departure, then test a small merchant payment after arrival with a backup ready.

The first time to discover that your bank needs another verification step is at home, with time to resolve it. Setting up WeChat and Alipay before a China business trip removes one avoidable job from the arrival day.

Treat setup as three separate tasks: gaining access to the account, connecting an eligible payment method and understanding how you will use it. Completing one does not prove that all three are ready.

Install the official apps and prepare your details

Use your device's official app store and check the app identity before installing. Keep the apps updated and use a mobile number you control and can continue to access during the trip. Have your passport and bank-card details available for any checks requested through the official app.

The Shanghai government's mobile payment guide describes registration with an overseas number for Alipay and linking eligible international cards in both Alipay and Weixin Pay, the payment service associated with WeChat. Follow the current screen instructions; menus and verification steps may vary.

Do not send account passwords, one-time codes or complete card details to a host, supplier or someone offering setup assistance. The account should remain under your control.

Check that your WeChat account works for communication

Complete the registration or sign-in process before adding a long list of business contacts. If the app requests further verification, follow its official process and allow time for resolution. Avoid relying on a last-minute workaround.

Add a known contact, send a message and check that you receive a reply. Use a recognisable display name and introduce yourself when adding your supplier or interpreter. Confirm that the contact has received your travel details.

Messaging and payment are separate practical checks. Being able to chat does not establish that a linked card will work for a particular payment. Keep both items on your preparation list.

In Alipay, look for the bank-card section. In WeChat, the payment route commonly runs through Services, Wallet and Bank Cards. The official setup guide shows these routes; use the app's current instructions if yours differs.

Enter the requested information accurately and complete any issuer verification. If linking fails, identify whether the message comes from the app or your bank, then contact the relevant official support channel. Repeatedly entering slightly different personal details can make troubleshooting less clear.

Card eligibility, account limits and applicable charges vary. Check the live payment screen and your card issuer's terms rather than relying on an old article's fee table. The State Council visitor guide specifically directs users to the payment product's prompts and service agreement for these conditions.

Understand the two payment flows

For a participating merchant, you may scan the merchant's collection code or show your own payment code for the cashier to scan. Confirm the merchant and amount before authorising a transaction. If you enter the amount yourself, check it against the bill.

Treat your live payment code as sensitive. Show it only when paying the intended merchant and do not send screenshots of it to someone who says they are helping you test an account.

After arrival, try a small ordinary purchase when you have another way to pay. That is a more useful test than assuming successful card linking proves every later transaction will work.

Keep travel purchases and supplier payments distinct

Do not treat a working restaurant payment as approval of a method for paying a supplier deposit. Business purchases need your normal supplier checks, authorised payment process and appropriate records.

If a supplier sends a payment request, confirm the recipient and payment basis through your established business process. Changed account details should be verified independently before money is sent. Convenience on a phone does not remove the need to know who is being paid.

Run a final departure check

  • You can sign into both apps and receive verification messages.
  • Your supplier and host can reach the correct WeChat account.
  • The intended card is linked, with outstanding checks resolved where possible.
  • You understand where to review the amount and any charge before confirming.
  • You have an alternative payment method, access to local cash and a charging plan.

For on-the-ground coordination, share your confirmed itinerary with TalkEast. Keep app and bank verification with the official providers so your business host can focus on the visits ahead.
